Kaepernick last week knelt during a second game, adding to the chorus of reactions from critics and defenders. Kaepernick has refused to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner during matches, in protest against the plight of black people in the United States and their treatment by police. On Thursday, Seahawks cornerback Lane, 26, followed Kaepernick's example when he didn't stand up for the national anthem during a game in Oakland, California. (more...)

The Padres must be pretty happy to see the Cubs leave town. San Diego is off Thursday and begins a 9-game road trip Friday in Miami. San Diego got a double dose of distasteful "home" cooking in the top of the fifth. Fister struck out six, walked one and retired 11 of the first 12 batters. Christian Friedrich (4-10) lost his eighth consecutive decision. He lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs and seven hits. (more...)
