Zika increases the risk of microcephaly - an otherwise rare condition that results in an abnormally small head - by fifty-fold, the researchers calculated. To date, Florida tops all the states in the country with the most number of Zika virus. Research has revealed that the Zika Virus can be spread from a pregnant woman to her fetus and has been linked to a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly in babies. (more...)

On Tuesday, the federal government published its first-ever national guidelines for doctors prescribing opioid painkillers. The CDC also said the patients prescribed with opioids should also be closely monitored. "Changing medical practice isn't quick and it isn't easy", Frieden said. This country's growing heroin epidemic is not, as one might assume, the effect of an illegal "gateway drug" such as marijuana, but rather, an offshoot of addiction to legally prescribed pills. For this reason, the researchers, led by Anna P. Durbin, MD , an associate professor in International Health at the Bloomberg School, were concerned that measuring antibodies alone may not truly indicate the ability of the vaccine to protect against dengue.
