Zika Virus Spreads to 20 Latin American Countries

The CDC updated its travel alert on Friday to 22 countries and regions, adding Barbados, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Guyana, Cape Verde, and Samoa . A dozen cases of Zika have been confirmed in the United States, including a case in Hawaii a few days ago, but in all instances these infections occurred from mosquito bites while traveling. Michigan undertaking plan to determine if Flint water safe

Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) wasn't treating the Flint River water with an anti-corrosive agent - a violation of federal law - so the water was eroding their iron pipes, turning the water brown. In February 2015, nearly a full year before the news of widespread lead poisoning gained headlines, the world's largest private water corporation, Veolia, deemed Flint's water safe. (more...)
Zika warning to couples trying for a baby

The Zika virus was first discovered in Africa in 1947, but until previous year, when it was found in Brazil, it had never been a threat in the Western Hemisphere . The WHO said the virus could infect 4 million people by the end of the year. Pregnant women who have not traveled are not at risk for contracting the virus. (more...)

Colombian Deputy Health Minister Fernando Ruiz said Friday that his country has recorded 41 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome that appear to be linked to Zika infections . The majority of people who get the virus, though, may not notice symptoms . Taylor explained that while mosquitoes are the main source of transmission, the virus could be passed from mother to child. Local clinic warns patients about Zika virus

Aedes mosquitoes that can transmit the virus are found in all countries in the North and South American except Canada and Chile, according to the Pan American Health Organization . Almost half of Colombia's Zika cases have been reported in the country's Caribbean region, the bulletin said. Researchers believe there is a link between the Zika virus and microcephaly, but say it is also possible that there is an error in record-keeping. (more...)
