Phenols, chemicals used in cleaning products and other household items, were the second on the list of highest concentrations, followed by flame retardants and highly fluorinated chemicals that are used to make non-stick cookware. The authors of the study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, were especially concerned about exposure to children, especially very young children who crawl around on the floor and put their hands in their mouths. More than a hundred people came to the steps of the courthouse around noon, some with their pets; others carried signs demanding changes at the county dog shelter. He heard claims from insiders that anywhere from 50 to more than 200 dogs were euthanized over the entire weekend, and that the number reported by the shelter is only for the dogs euthanized on Friday. Hurricane Gaston expected to weaken in the Atlantic

It will likely be named Tropical Storm Hermine . "However, some re-strengthening is expected to begin Friday night, and Gaston could become a hurricane again on Saturday". Gaston is moving northwest at 17 miles per hour and is forecast to pass east of Bermuda before turning east toward Europe. As of Friday morning, it was moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour. The tropical mosquito that spreads Zika and other viruses is found along the southern U.S. Friday's directive lists 11 states that will need to begin screening blood in the next month due to their location or because of the influx of travelers from Zika outbreak countries. (more...)
Illinois 'Obamacare' health insurance rates up significantly

Cigna and Humana are the only two other health insurers in the marketplace exchange in Tennessee and both got approval Tuesday for rate increases of more than 44 percent for 2017. However, in North Carolina, Blue Cross and Blue Shield is the only carrier that has notified the N.C. Department of Insurance it will provide coverage throughout the entire state next year. (more...)
