Rohingyas are security threat, India govt tells SC

About 421,000 Rohingya Muslims have crossed from Myanmar to Bangladesh since August 25, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

Hasina made the call while addressing a reception accorded by Bangladeshi community in NY as she is in a visit to US to attend the 72 UN General Assembly.

"All our agencies are keeping a close watch on the Rohingya refugees staying in Bangladesh".

UNHCR spokeswoman Marixie Mercado told a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday that 250,000 children had fled Myanmar for Bangladesh.

Many of them are likely to be targeted for radicalisation by ISI/ISIS and other extremists groups. "You have to get them to some sort of space where aid can be delivered", said Chris Lom, of the global Organisation for Migration.

Imam, however, said so far, there was no report of the Rohingya refugees trying to create a ruckus in Bangladesh.

However, the Human Rights Activist and the opposition led by Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying that the government should provide shelter to the Rohingyas.

The government also said in its affidavit that it is completely within the executive policy how to deal with illegal migrants like Rohingya Muslims.

Facing a mass influx of Rohingyas from Myanmar, Bangladesh called on the global community to intervene and put pressure on Myanmar to address the exodus. She said the government wanted to find out why the exodus was happening.

"India which has open /porous borders with Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar etc makes it vulnerable to an influx of illegal immigration and resultant problems", the affidavit stated.

THE HEAD of a United Nations team appointed to investigate alleged human rights abuses in Burma (Myanmar) has expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in restive Rakhine State, including "dehumanising propaganda that akin the Rohingya to pests". "We are also helping Bangladesh. we have sent food grains and other material as humanitarian aid".

The spokesperson said the group demanded an end to the alleged genocide in Myanmar, to halt village-razing and demanded that Myanmar officials accept the return of and give full citizen status to displaced Rohingyas.

Until the arrival of the latest surges of refugees, Bangladesh has been hosting another 400,000 of refugees for three decades.
