Bills beat Jets 21-12, lead the AFC East through Week 1

Jets vs. Bills 6 things to know for Gang Green's opener

Just as the 2016 season ended, the New York Jets are matched up against the Buffalo Bills, an AFC East pairing that seemingly never gets old.

The usual problems hurt the Bills all day. The Bills get a new perspective on things in 2017, as GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott get into their rookie seasons with the club.

Meanwhile, Sean McDermott got his National Football League head-coaching career off to a good start. The first-round draft pick was a starter the moment he walked through the door, though some of that was out of necessity after the Bills allowed Stephon Gilmore to leave via free agency. With questions at the quarterback and wide receiver position, McCoy is primed to have another monster year running behind an offensive line that specializes in moving the defenders off the line. They even opted to prioritize youth last week by cutting the previously longest-tenured Jet, long snapper Tanner Purdum.

Tyrod handles things well: It wasn't a ideal day as the Bills quarterback went 16-for-28 passing, but Taylor looked more than ready to take the field. Matthews had back-to-back solid seasons in Philadelphia and will be the first test for new Jets cornerback Morris Claiborne. Bills' miscues - red zone interception, missed field goal - were the reason this game was close. The Bills defense limited the Jets to just 11 first downs, and McCown went 26 of 39 passing but for just 187 yards and two interceptions.

Tyrod Taylor almost turned a third-and-goal opportunity into points for the Jets.

The third quarter began raggedly for both offenses, but then came back-to-back-to-back touchdowns.

Showtime calls Mayweather-McGregor massive success
The bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor became the biggest ever financial gains for the fighters. You didn't get rattled; you made three game changes during the fight and that's what a true champion does.

The 2.5 yards per carry average for the Jets, was the same average Buffalo's defense held their first three opponents to in the preseason. The Bills' Ramon Humber intercepted McCown's two-point conversion pass, protecting a 14-12 lead.

The Bills responded on their next possession with a nine-play 80-yard drive capped by Tolbert's touchdown. On this series, McCoy was on fire. Their third march of more than 60 yards produced Taylor's 1-yard touchdown toss to WR Andre Holmes, who had two TD catches for Oakland vs. the Jets in 2015.

Either way, the Jets running game must get better - 22 yards on seven carries for Forte and 16 yards on six carries for Powell isn't good enough.

Petty is the Jets projected backup, though Todd Bowles has yet to make an official decision between him and Christian Hackenberg.

"They're surprising because they're guys who have been here", Bowles said of the blown assignments, adding that correcting the problem is partly a coaching issue.
