Former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas wins 2017 PGA Championship

Kevin Kisner shot 67 for the second straight day and is tied for the 36-hole lead at the PGA Championship

Justin Thomas earned his first major victory and the Wanamaker Trophy as PGA champion with his clutch play on the Green Mile.

The 25-year-old Matsuyama missed out on equaling his previous best at a major, a second-place finish achieved at this season's U.S. Open in June.

Thomas rolled in an wonderful 40-foot chip shot at the par-3 13th for a two-stroke lead and curled a 14-foot putt into the left side of the cup to birdie the par-3 17th for a three-shot edge, making a closing bogey all-but irrelevant.

Hideki Matsuyama was bidding to become the first Japanese player to win a major.

The third player in the final group Jason Day faired much, much worst.

The 18-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th gave him a two-stroke cushion - soon to be three strokes when Kisner three-putted the 16th hole for bogey - and helped him survive the bogey on the final hole. Thomas is from Goshen, Ky., just outside of Louisville. I want to win every tournament I play in.

On a day when Phil Mickelson failed to make a birdie and shot 79 and defending champion Jimmy Walker finished with an 81, Fowler will take it.

Patrick Reed shot a 67 to get to 6-under overall after a bogey on the final hole.

All of the responses were brief, and two were interspersed with curse words. "Disappointed with my performance today". The Superbook is giving Kuchar the second best odds to win at 5/1, after he shot a four-under 66 on Saturday.

Grayson Murray lies two shots further adrift, with the American followed by Canada's Graham DeLaet and Italy's Francesco Molinari on two-under par.

Matsuyama found the heavy rough with his drive on 16, eventually carding a bogey, and when Thomas knocked in a sizable birdie putt on 17, the tournament was his. He needed a clutch putt on the first hole just to prevent a double bogey.

"It's just a dream come true to be here, to be up here, talking to you guys at the PGA Championship, one of the greatest tournaments in the world", he said in his press conference after his third round.

Thomas was positive from the get go, and even though there were times his aggression got him into trouble, his level head took over to keep his card well clear of any blow outs.

Cape Town - Nick Faldo has slammed former world number one Jason Day for throwing away his chances of winning a second PGA Championship title with "one insane decision". "I'm still right there". Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth - two of Thomas' spring break buddies - were there to celebrate with their friend. "I actually went back for one more club and got greedy with it".

But he bogeyed three of his first five holes to ruin his chances. Rahm shot 70, and McIlroy - a two-time victor at Quail Hollow who lost to Fowler in a playoff there in 2012 - had a 72.

"I don't know what I'm going to do", said McIlroy, who suffered the rib/back injury testing equipment over the winter.
