Djokovic set for lengthy break

Defending champion Murray led by a set and a break but was troubled by a hip injury as he lost 12 of the last 14 games to go down 3-6 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-1.

That would be a first one for Djokovic, who has been the best player on tour for about a decade.

Djokovic leaves the court after retiring in his loss to Berdych.

It was on his second service game that Raonic was facing two break points after magnificent backhand winners from Federer, but he somehow managed to escape this threat.

When the big Czech took down Federer as a teenager in the first round of the 2004 Olympics, a month after the Swiss had claimed his second Wimbledon crown, Berdych was earmarked for superstardom. Marin Cilic made it into the last four after beating Gilles Muller in five sets with the help of 33 aces.

"But I think it is now a question of, probably in his words, thinking more now long-term and finding out what actually is the problem, what does he need to do to get it better, to be 100%".

"At the end of the day, this is something I have to deal with and accept it", he said, declining to say what his immediate treatment plan was. I was really lacking practice really. Am I getting out of each week healthy. If it means taking a few weeks' rest, then so be it. After missing a passing shot, the DJoker walked up to the head official and said he could not go on. "But then there's a strong team around the generation of Rafa [Nadal] and Murray and Djokovic".

"It's not the shoulder. He was doing great things to keep pressure on me all the time". I talked to my dad.

Federer is now the even-more obvious favorite for a record 19th Grand Slam title.

And his fellow Scot thinks Murray might consider a lay-off if he can not be fit for the US Open in six weeks' time. But he must see the injuries to his main rivals as the draw inviting him forward up in a way he could have never foreseen.

However, with Querrey and Cilic having fired 231 aces between them at the tournament, a long afternoon can not be ruled out.

A month shy of his 36th birthday, Federer's 12th quarter-final victory eclipsed the long-time record of all-time great Jimmy Connors. The result was a stark contrast from previous year, with a resurgent Federer displaying all the talent, speed and brilliance from the past, but adding some new tricks. "I think that's the difference", said Federer alluding to his injuries.

"When he's standing up on the baseline, hitting forehands, dictating, he's a very risky player".

"Yeah, I guess the break is something that I will have to consider right now", Djokovic said in his post-match press conference. "Confidence is a huge thing", Federer concluded.
