"As the officers confronted the terrorists - and were shot - a member of the public also suffered gunshot wounds".

Authorities have not released details about where or how the seven victims died. Twenty-one remained in critical condition Sunday.

Emergency officials said 48 people, including two police officers, were treated at hospitals across London. He was stabbed in the face and leg.

According to the Ken Marsh, chairman of the London police association, three officers from the Metropolitan Police were injured as well as an officer from another police force.There were reports that one of the officers, a rugby-player, grappled with an assailant.

Dowling's girlfriend, Marie Bondeville, was also injured in the attack.

"There are barely words to describe their bravery - officers who ran towards danger with no thought for their own safety", Metropolitan Police Federation Chairman Ken Marsh said in a statement.

Seven women and five men have been arrested in east London connection with the investigation.

"The mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services and the government to coordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack and provide leadership and reassurance to Londoners and visitors to our city", the spokesman said.

The assault was claimed by the so-called Islamic State group. Neighbors of the site of one of the raids said they recognized one of the men who was shown in news reports as one of the attackers.

"Following updates from police and security officials, I can confirm that the awful incident in London is being treated as a potential act of terrorism", Prime Minister Theresa May said.

The Rt Rev Alan Williams, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brentwood, said: "I heard with horror about the terrible attack in London last night, which sadly comes so soon after the bombing in Manchester".

Hours earlier, the area packed with bars and restaurants around the foodie magnet of Borough Market had been a scene of panic, as people barricaded themselves in pubs and restaurants or fled through the streets. The Courier Mail newspaper reported that she was stabbed in the neck while eating dinner with her boyfriend after finishing a shift at Elliot's restaurant in London Bridge.

"Although he is seriously unwell, he was able to recount how he faced the attackers armed only with his baton, outside London Bridge station", said the top cop.

Large areas around London Bridge and Borough Market remain cordoned off.
