Though penetration of voice-interface devices is low, at around just 9% of United Kingdom households, interest is growing. The research firm expects 35.6 million Americans will use a voice-activated device - at least once a month this year.

All of this is a turnabout for Amazon from a few years ago.

Smart home devices are geared to become the next battleground for tech companies, with the industry estimated to hit nearly $200 billion by 2021. VoiceLabs, a chunderifically self-described "Voice Experience Analytics" company, is hoping to cash-in on Amazon's success by inserting "6-15 seconds long" advertisements "at the start and end of conversations".

Amazon Echo Show is priced at $229.99. For now though, it will only work if you call other Echo Show customers. Notice the amount of time the video focuses on how well the device is able to act as a communication conduit between users.

Between now and November, Amazon will need to focus heavily on making sure IT managers see the value of Echo Show and to overcome their worries about the device's privacy and security, he said. But he declined to say whether Amazon meant to offer that capability.
