Heroics aside, shot-blocking a last resort in NHL playoffs

T.J. Oshie was called for a high stick penalty that didn’t actually feature a high stick

Crosby was cross-checked in the head in Monday's Game 3 by Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen, a former Penguin.

If the Penguins are panicking after Sidney Crosby's concussion diagnosis yesterday, it's tough to tell.

They need more from trade-deadline acquisition Kevin Shattenkirk, who will command a hefty price this offseason, but has done little of positive note in this series. That left the Penguins without two regular forwards - Conor Sheary also had a concussion - and they responded with a 3-2 win that will be remembered for the player who wasn't on the ice.

Just not in time to try and help the Penguins build on the 2-1 lead they take into Game 4 (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN).

Murray, last year's Stanley Cup darling, was set to lead the Penguins to another Stanley Cup run, until he suffered a lower-body injury about an hour before Game 1 of the first round against Columbus.

He was held out of Wednesday's Game 4, which the Penguins won 3-2.

Sidney Crosby was back on the ice Thursday, but his status for the remainder of the playoffs remains unclear. "I thought he interfered with blocker and hands and he (Talbot) couldn't make the save". The Capitals have also attempted 306 shots compared to the 180 pucks the Penguins have fired towards the net.

Fleury said the Penguins can't get caught up in trying to retaliate, though Washington expects Pittsburgh to ramp up the physical play going forward.

Jake Guentzel scored early in the second period to put the Penguins up 2-0, but the lead was short-lived.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Washington. "We have to make sure we play a full 60 minutes going forward here". The Capitals would get extended pressure on Fleury only to be stopped while the Penguins expertly counterattacked.

"While Shooting Australia's focus is and must be the development of top-level athletes for the future, we will not turn our backs on someone who has been such a great servant of our sport and our country in the past", the association said. The hit game at 5:24 into game three on May 1 and the team went on to lose in overtime 3-2.

"They had an opportunity to play well [and] I didn't think our top guys really stepped up...which was very unfortunate for us", Trotz said.

Not even Capitals head coach Barry Trotz would come to the defense of Ovechkin in this one.

With his second goal of the contest - Getzlaf's 36th career playoff marker - he surpassed Teemu Selanne as the Ducks' all-time leading post-season goal scorer.

Not only does Crosby's injury leave them without their best player, it carries residual effects down the roster. They're not getting ahead of themselves, especially without Crosby. "We played the game hard". Another second-round loss to the Penguins after winning the Presidents' Trophy for the second season in a row would be a painful déjà vu. He returns briefly for three games on March 4 before missing seven more games.

You would think Oshie would be the most upset after receiving a high-sticking penalty that shouldn't have been in Game 4.

Steelers Fans Excited To Welcome James Conner To Team
Congrats to Conner as his story now comes full circle. "It's a dream come true", Conner said on a conference call. They're the ones whom we, as Pittsburghers, use to rationalize why other teams will always cower against us.
