'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade

A trade war with the United States would affect the Chinese economy badly, and a military clash on the Korean peninsula would trigger a political crisis in China and put the leadership under challenge from inside the party, Zhang said.

"I think that's a very important symbolisation of the growing rapport between the two countries". The most powerful message for the Chinese leader may have been Trump's decision to launch USA missile strikes at Syria.

Trump has repeatedly hammered China for exporting more to the US than it buys.

"We ask for God's wisdom as we face the challenge of our very troubled world", said Trump who added: "We hope as long as America stands for justice, then peace and harmony will in the end prevail".

With a limited but decisive response to Syrian President Bashar Assad's alleged use of banned sarin nerve gas on Syrian civilians, Trump won plaudits from previously skeptical USA allies in Europe, as well as from some of his harshest critics at home. The U.S. along with other western powers are accusing the Syrian government of using poisonous gas in a manner identical to the accusations generated by the chemical incident in Ghouta near Damascus in August 2013, which appears to have been orchestrated by Saudi Arabian controlled rebels. He often has relied on his flexibility as a way to reassure Americans that some of his more unconventional and controversial proposals were merely suggestions. But how long will it be before another Russian warplane is shot down or the trigger-happy Trump strikes Russian troops, elevating and intensifying the conflict into a showdown between the USA and Russia? Those travel orders have so far been blocked by the courts. "That's the first time I've heard them say that in a bilateral context", he said. "And, more importantly, we have further built up understanding and establish a kind of trust, and we have initially built up a working relationship and friendship".

As a candidate and private citizen, Trump cast Syria's civil war as a quagmire from which the United States should steer clear. The attack against a Syrian air base was the first USA assault against the government of President Bashar Assad. That warning comes no more than 90 minutes before the strike, according to one American official.

Hoffman clings to lead
Couples, the 1992 Masters victor , could become the oldest major victor in history at age 57 if his balky back can last 72 holes. Rory McIlroy was primed to join the logjam near the top until an very bad break on the final hole curbed his second-round move.

After predicting a "very difficult" encounter with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Donald Trump emerged from their first meeting hailing "an outstanding relationship" between chiefs of the world's biggest economies. In 2011, President Barack Obama justified intervention in Libya by citing specific criteria, including the imminent slaughter of civilians.

The Trump administration, of course, hopes the North will internalize a different message: namely, that it should abandon its weapons program to avoid a USA attack.

But President Trump, who recently said that he likes to be "flexible", changed course this week when he ordered a strike on Shayrat airfield and nearby Syrian military infrastructure in response to a chemical attack that killed at least 80 people in northwestern Syria on Tuesday. "Trump suddenly realizes he's responsible for much of the world".

"A lot of this is an emotional response, but nothing about this strike suggests that the fundamentals of the Syria conflict have shifted", said Noah Bonsey, a Syria analyst with the International Crisis Group.

Trump then met with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and chose to act.
