Census Bureau says Shawnee County has more people going than coming

U.S. Census figures estimate Lucas County’s population at 432,488 as

Maricopa County, Ariz., gained 81,360 people, the largest increase in the country.

Still, Duval didn't grow as fast as some other counties in Florida.

Kent County grew by more than 6,000 residents between 2015 and 2016, the biggest population jump in the state, according to U.S. Census estimates released today.

The population has declined all one year since 1997.

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said to reduce suburban sprawl, "we have to increase the number of amenities that are available to the residents" and bring together people in building up communities and neighborhoods in cities.

Ottawa County also is struggling to maintain its population, with the new census data estimating a 758-person drop from 41,394 in 2010 to 40,636 in 2016. Immigration, particularly from Mexico, was the key factor behind most of Chicago's population growth in the 1990s. Cook County, which encompasses Chicago, also led all counties in population drops, with roughly 21,300 fewer residents.

Duval added the 38th-most people nationwide.

The nation's 382 metro areas contained approximately 277.1 million people in 2016, representing approximately 86 percent of the nation's population. Until the Census does its decennial survey of households in 2020, all population figures are estimates.

Wayne County continued a population decline, albeit at a slower rate. The St. Joseph metropolitan area includes Buchanan, Andrew and DeKalb counties in Missouri and Doniphan County, Kansas. Defiance, Henry, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Williams counties all had lower population estimates. The census data said domestic migration out of the county was 2,314 people, which was the largest loss of any county in the region.

Seattle grew by 1.9 percent, while San Francisco grew by 0.8 percent.

Harris County, Texas, where Houston is the county seat; and Clark County, Nev., where Las Vegas is the county seat; ranked second and third for largest population growth from 2015 to 2016.

While eight states lost population between July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016, IL lost the most, with 37,508 residents, those numbers showed.

The Center for Economic Growth, an economic and business development organization, has as its mission the improvement of the Capital Region business climate.

Newly released Census Bureau estimates show communities in parts of western MI with relatively strong population growth versus other parts of the state.

However, Pennsylvania lost 7,677 residents in that one year.

Heber, UT was the fastest-growing micro area, with an increase of 4.7 percent between 2015 and 2016.

That may seem like a lot of growth considering that the entire population of Southwest Washington is less than 700,000.
