The palms used during Ash Wednesday themselves hark back to a more joyous celebration: the previous year's Palm Sunday, which celebrates Jesus's return to Jerusalem when he was greeted by crowds waving palm branches. "I say that they are more relevant today than ever".

Each year, six local churches of different Christian denominations offer community Lenten worship services or luncheons.

"It is a moment of reckoning, an opportunity to cut through the noise and clutter of our lives to remember what is essential", said The Rev. Rosa Lindahl, associate rector for Church of the Ascension. "These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them", the Pontiff said in his address.

Starting this Ash Wednesday, it is expected that such individuals will reflect on His life, death and resurrection.

Pune: Theatre actor Joel D'Souza will abstain from non-vegetarian food from Wednesday for Lent, a 40-day period of atonement and self-denial ahead of Easter.

"This tradition started in the year 312 by our Blessed Mother", Peterson said.

"Lent is a very important season of the year", Principal Jo Tassin said. "If you give up candy, you could give the money you would have spent on candy to a charity". But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret.

China reports first case of imported Zika virus
China's first case of the Zika virus has been found in a 34-year-old man who recently travelled to Venezuela. But the link to the Zika virus is not clear; other infections can spark the problem, including dengue fever.

"It isn't always about giving up candy", Santee said.

But as I read on, the more it kind of made sense. "Unless you've experienced the look on someone's face after they've participated, you can't say it's cheapening the whole idea", he said.

At 7:30 a.m., a quick service of imposition of ashes will be at the church, with the service lasting about 15 minutes.

He also will celebrate Mass at 7 p.m.at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

17, the season also starts a much-loved tradition in Sunnyside; soup and pie lunches dished up by volunteers from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 405 S. Fourth St.

Beginning at noon an English mass will be held followed by a bilingual mass at 6 p.m. and a Spanish mass at 8 p.m.
